The opening ceremony was held in Goiânia, Brazil, at Rio Vermelho Gymnasium. It had all the traditional protocols of an international sports solemnity. The usual parade of delegations presented the countries participating in the competition: Germany, Belarus, Bulgaria, Canada, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey and the host country Brazil. Then, the execution of the Brazilian national anthem followed the event.
Luciano Cabral, president of the CBDU and vice president of the FISU opened the speeches, thanking everyone present, the organizing committee and welcoming the athletes. Rosaura Mendez, representative of CISCA, also spoke at the occasion. Rosaura thanked the entire organizing committee, especially the CBDU. “It is an example for all organizations. It is the most active in the continent and everyone works day after day for the development of university sports”. She also wished the athletes good luck, finishing her speech: “I wish everyone a good competition and I would like them to remember that the championship is very important, but here we will make friends for life.”
Right after the entrance of the flag and execution of the FISU anthem, is was time for the oaths. Cassey Brennan took the oath of the referees, promising impartiality and respect for the rules of the competition, with a true spirit of sportsmanship. Representing the athletes, Antônio Regis, a brazilian, took the oath that included the commitment to sport without doping and without drugs, with a spirit of friendship, fair play and sports conduct. In this way, for the honor of their countries, their universities and the progress of the sport.
The president of the Brazilian Wrestling Confederation also spoke at the event, wishing the athletes good luck and wishing that they enjoy their stay in the city of Goiás. The President of the Goias Federation of University Sports, Lusimar Santos, was responsible for declaring officially opened the World University Championship of Wrestling.
WUC Wrestling – Goiânia 2018 is an achievement of the International Federation of University Sports (FISU), the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU), the Goias Federation of University Sports (FGDU) and the Brazilian Wrestling Confederation (CBW).
Sponsored by Correios, Quiaodan, Taishan and SuperBolla, Gympass and the Goiás State Government, the championship runs until 9th September at the Rio Vermelho Gymnasium. Admission is open and competitions start at 2pm every day until Sunday.
